INTERA has won a 3-year contract with the Swiss National Cooperative for the Disposal of Radioactive Waste (Nagra) to conduct model-based assessments of the impact of repository-induced effects on the long-term performance of repository systems. The work will examine two repository types—high-level waste (HLW) and low-and intermediate-level waste (L/ILW)—and is aimed at determining whether site specific aspects may exhibit a significant impact on the safety margins associated with the mitigation of repository-induced effects. The role of the repository-induced effects will be evaluated by conducting thermo-hydraulic simulations of two phase flow and multi-component transport along the backfilled repository configurations and in the surrounding host rock in 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional model set-ups. The simulations will cover the entire lifecycle of the repositories, including construction, operations, and post-closure.

Dr. Jean Croisé Joins INTERA
We are pleased to announce that Jean Croisé has joined INTERA as a Principal Scientist in the company’s branch office in Switzerland. With a PhD in civil engineering and a MS degree in water and environmental engineering, he an expert in conducting in-situ hydraulic investigations in porous and fractured rocks and performing synthesis and numerical modeling of groundwater flow and transport of heat and fluids. Jean has applied his expertise on projects involving the disposal of radioactive wastes in deep geologic repositories, the investigation and remediation of soils and groundwater impacted by volatile chemicals, and the development of regional groundwater flow and contaminant transport models. In addition to providing technical expertise on projects, he will support the marketing and sales activities for geoscientific services in the environmental, water resources, and waste isolation sectors.

INTERA will be exhibiting our environmental restoration and radioactive waste isolation services at the 2017 Waste Management Symposia Conference being held March 5 – 9 at the Phoenix Convention Center. In addition, two INTERA staff members are presenting papers at the conference. Dr. Sunil Mehta will present “Performance Assessment for the Waste Management Area C at the Hanford Site in Southeast Washington,” while Dr. Matt Kozak will present two papers—“A Hybrid Approach to the Use of Safety Functions with Features, Events, and Processes (FEPs) in Performance Assessment” and “Analysis of Past Leaks from Waste Management Area C, Hanford, Washington.” Additional information on the conference schedule, technical program, and presentation sessions can be found at www.wmsym.org. Please be sure to stop by and visit INTERA in Exhibit Hall 4, Booth 421.
