Dr. Alison Adams, PE, Principal Engineer & Director of Water Utility Resiliency at INTERA, recently authored a white paper entitled Digitizing Water, that details the steps to modernizing water utility resiliency with data analytics and digital transformation. As new technologies emerge, water utilities are moving toward the goal of complete system optimization, or smart water. This requires a holistic approach to resource management and utility operations and reconsideration of what data is critical and how to best use it to support decision making. INTERA Part of Team Awarded Central Plateau Cleanup Contract at Hanford
The U.S. Department of Energy recently awarded a 10-year, $10 billion contract to Central Plateau Cleanup Company LLC to continue work on the environmental cleanup of the Hanford Site near Richland, Washington. As a key member of the Central Plateau Cleanup Company team, which includes Amentum, Fluor Federal Services, Atkins Nuclear Secured LLC, and DBD Inc., INTERA’s efforts will focus on meeting the contaminated soil and groundwater cleanup mission under the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Recovery Act (CERCLA). On hearing of the award announcement, INTERA’s President & CEO, Dr. Marsh Lavenue, stated, “I’m extremely proud of our team of geoscientists, engineers, risk assessors, and data analysis professionals that has supported the cleanup activities at Hanford over the past 12 years. Their efforts not only positioned INTERA to help win this follow-on contract, but more importantly, contributed to meeting key milestones in the environmental restoration of the Hanford Site. I’m excited about the opportunity to continue our successful performance under the new Central Plateau Cleanup Company’s leadership team.”

INTERA’s Michael Hannon, PhD, Geoscientist, recently had two papers featured in the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) Reservoir Evaluation & Engineering Journal. The first article entitled Fast and Accurate Core Analysis by the Full-Immersion Pressure-Pulse Decay: Part 1—Theory focuses on a numerical simulator designed to model flow through an anisotropic porous sample, demonstrating its performance and accuracy in addition to providing a first-order comparison between the speed and shape of the pressure-decay responses of the full-immersion method with those of other similar transient methods.

Dr. Hannon’s second article, Fast and Accurate Core Analysis by the Full-Immersion Pressure-Pulse Decay: Part 2—Practice and Demonstration, continues the work of presenting a novel approach for making petrophysical assessments of tight core samples. This method, the full-immersion pressure-pulse decay, involves applying a rapid increase in pressure in a chamber surrounding the entire outer surface area of a cylindrical sample, shutting the system in, and monitoring the pressure decay in the chamber as it reaches a new equilibrium. Once complete, these developments should propel this technology to fill a critical need to determine petrophysical properties (porosity and permeability) of tight rocks in a time-efficient manner and in a way that does not compromise their accuracy.
