Giving Back

INTERA and our staff are committed to the communities in which we live and work. We engage with local organizations to participate in a wide variety of efforts that include cleaning up litter in parks and along waterways, re-planting native vegetation to restore critical habitat, supporting local families in need during the holidays, mentoring students at the grade-school and university levels, and swinging our golf clubs to help fight hunger. Several of our staff volunteer internationally, providing technical expertise to develop sustainable solutions to water scarcity and contamination in Africa and partnering with organizations such as the Rotary Club and United By Friendship to fund potable water supply systems and provide medical equipment for clinics in Guatemala. Many of our staff also serve on various community boards or hold leadership positions in other non-profit organizations. Others raise funds and participate in walks, runs, and rides to support cancer research, serve as judges in school science fairs, and organize educational events for youth.

Take for example the efforts of Daniel Lupton. For the past four years, Daniel has served as a technical advisor to Well Aware—a nonprofit organization that funds and implements life-saving water systems to drive economic development and build self-sufficient communities in Africa. In addition to raising funds for the organization, he has made several trips to install or rehabilitate water systems. One of the projects he supported was in the community of Kalelwa in western Kenya which has four schools serving 600 students. The community well was built in the 1940s and while the pump was replaced in 2002, it had since failed and the well had not produced water since 2011. As a result, the community was relying on raw water that had caused several water related diseases. Daniel quickly determined that the well failed due to compromised production pipe and a burned out motor. The faulty pipe and pump were replaced at a fraction of the cost of drilling a new borehole and the well is now supplying fresh water that is helping revitalize the community and schools.

In addition to the time and effort donated by our staff, making corporate donations to local communities has long been a hallmark of INTERA. As an example, for nearly 20 years INTERA has contributed to an annual golf tournament in Austin to raise funds for charities that include the Capital Area Food Bank of Texas and Meals on Wheels & More. These charities work to nourish and enrich the lives of the homebound and those in need through programs that promote dignity and independent living. For the past several years, INTERA has served as the title sponsor for the tournament—which over the years has raised more than $300,000 to support these vital causes.

At INTERA, giving back to the community is more than once-a-year event. Our staff are passionate about volunteering and regularly organize office-wide activities, continually seeking out new partnering opportunities with local charitable organizations.
