Albuquerque, New Mexico
Albuquerque is the most populous city in New Mexico and the state’s corporate and educational hub. Crisscrossed by the Rio Grande and Route 66, Albuquerque’s history, architecture, and cuisine are influenced by various Native American Pueblo cultures, the old Mexican-American West, and 1950s American popular culture. Albuquerque boasts numerous museums, libraries, galleries, and cultural events. The largest pow wow in North America, the National Gathering, is held annually in the city. Every October, hundreds of brightly-colored hot air balloons fill the sky during the Albuquerque International Balloon Festival, the largest balloon festival in the world.
With 310 days of sunshine a year, there are plenty of opportunities to ski the nearby Sandia Mountains, bike the Valles Caldera National Preserve, or simply visit one of the nearby national monuments. A destination for film production, Albuquerque has served as a shooting location for many popular films and television programs, and Netflix has a main production hub at Albuquerque studios. Albuquerque is also home to Kirtland Air Force Base and Sandia National Laboratories, both of which were involved with the Manhattan Project during the Atomic Age.
