Carlsbad, New Mexico
Surrounded by mountains, high desert, and plains, Carlsbad originated as an oasis in the desert and boasts more than 350 days of sunshine a year. Located 26 miles east of Carlsbad, the WIPP site is the nation’s only deep geologic long-lived radioactive waste repository for defense-generated transuranic waste, which is permanently being stored in a salt formation 2,150 feet underground. In addition to the WIPP Site, the economy of Carlsbad is based largely on mineral extraction, with the city producing more potash than any other location in the US.
Carlsbad is also home to a number of tourist destinations including Carlsbad Caverns National Park, Guadalupe Mountains National Park, Lincoln National Forest, Sitting Bull Falls, Brantley Lake State Park, the Pecos River, and the Living Desert Zoo & Gardens, a zoo and botanical garden displaying plants and animals of the Chihuahuan Desert in their native habitats. The Carlsbad Museum and Art Center also attracts visitors to its collection of Southwestern art and Native American artifacts.
