Founded in 1610, Santa Fe is the oldest state capital in the United States. Santa Fe is seated at an elevation of 7,000 feet and offers skiing from Thanksgiving through Easter. Other popular outdoor activities in the area include white water river rafting, horseback riding, fly-fishing, and hiking. Santa Fe is known for its Pueblo style of architecture, with flat roofs and other features associated with traditional adobe construction.
The city has long been a center for arts and culture and is home to one of the country’s largest art markets. Santa Fe boasts nearly 250 art galleries and dealers to explore, including a museum dedicated to Georgia O’Keefe, the “Mother of American modernism.” Other cultural highlights include Santa Fe Plaza, the Santa Fe Opera House, the Palace of the Governors, and the Fiestas de Santa Fe, a festival held every Fall with arts, crafts, food booths, and mariachis. Santa Fe is also well known for its distinctive New Mexico cuisine and musical performances.
