Helalur ‘Helal’ was born and raised on the southeast coast of Chittagong, Bangladesh. “I was always good at math and sciences in high school, so my parents and teachers encouraged me to be an engineer.” In Bangladesh, there was just one public engineering university (Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology) and only 800 students get the opportunity to study there every year. Because the government pays the educational expenses for all students, there was a tremendous amount of competition to get into the university. “Fortunately, I was one of the 800 that was accepted, and I still fondly remember the day that I found my name on the admissions list.”

In 2007, Helal completed his Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering and joined a structural steel manufacturing company in Bangladesh. “I didn’t really like the job and was thinking that the subject I liked most during my undergraduate studies was water resources engineering. I also realized that being in a riverine country, this could be a good career path.”

To make this happen, Helal decided to apply abroad to graduate school. In 2009, he started his Master’s degree in water resources engineering at Washington State University. While pursuing this degree, he participated in a project at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Hanford Site near Richland, Washington. “During my graduate research, I learned about the huge waste cleanup efforts at Hanford. I decided that I wanted to apply my education to help address nationally- and globally-important issues such as the restoration of environmental impacts caused by past industrial operations and waste disposal practices.”

In 2010, Helal joined INTERA’s Richland office as a groundwater and vadose zone modeler. “As a recent graduate engineer with little modeling experience, the company’s focus on mentoring junior employees proved extremely valuable in getting me up to speed. It also doesn’t hurt that I get to work with a top-notch group of hydrologists, hydrogeologists, and engineers that love to share their modeling expertise and experience.”

Outside of work, Helal is a soccer fanatic. “Before arriving in the United States, I was afraid that I was coming to a country where people don’t understand soccer! I certainly never thought that I would be able to play or watch soccer regularly. But to my pleasant surprise, Richland is a soccer loving city and there’s even a professional soccer team in the state. I really enjoy watching the Seattle Sounders’ games with friends at the stadium.”
