Philip ‘Phil’ grew up in Gainesville, Florida as a third generation native Floridian. At an early age, he spent summers free diving in the inland springs around Gainesville and surfing and fishing in the Atlantic Ocean. “My brother and I would spend all day surfing in front of our grandparent’s beach house and I would try to predict when and where we would find the best surf.”

This interest led Phil to the Ocean Engineering program at Florida Atlantic University, where he earned a degree in ocean engineering that introduced him to the mechanics of wave generation, wave shoaling, and nearshore hydrodynamics. Wanting to further this knowledge, Phil enrolled in the graduate Coastal and Ocean Engineering program at the University of Florida, where he earned a Master’s degree in engineering.

After graduate school, Phil spent nearly 10 years with a coastal engineering consulting firm, where his role was one of increasing responsibility rising from Staff Engineer to Director of Coastal Hydraulics. He left to join Ocean Engineering Associates (OEA)—acquired by INTERA in 2013—for the opportunity to research wave structure interaction for the Federal Highway Administration. “Developing the wave force equations with Drs. Max Sheppard (former President of OEA) and Justin Marin has definitely been one of my career highlights.” In addition to the wave structure interaction, Phil has focused his efforts on hindcasting hurricanes with computer models to simulate wave and storm surge and evaluate the effects of these events on flooding and bridge superstructures. “It’s really exciting to see the results of the computer simulations, especially when you’re evaluating the effect of some proposed modification of the waterway.”

In his spare time Phil builds surfboards, applying his engineering background to mix different materials in composite structures that are hydro-dynamically efficient and strong. He also enjoys traveling, hiking and snowboarding. “I love traveling with my family, seeing my kids discover new places.”
