Reliable water management for utilities, industries, and authorities
INTERA’s experience in Europe dates back to the early 1980s when we began supporting the Swiss national radioactive waste management agency, Nagra, in evaluating sites to serve as deep geologic repositories for radioactive wastes. From our offices in Wettingen (Switzerland), Limonest (France), and London (United Kingdom), we continue to provide hydrogeologic characterisation and modelling services to national agencies responsible for the disposal of radioactive wastes, as well as a wide range of other water resource services focused on developing and applying state-of-the-art data acquisition and modelling technology.
INTERA’s water resources experts help plan, develop, manage, and protect groundwater and surface water resources with one overriding concept in mind — sustainable use. For federal, regional and local authorities (e.g., groundwater conservation districts, water and river basin authorities, environmental protection agencies), it means we help find ways to minimise risk, provide information needed to make scientifically-sound decisions regarding water resource management, and ensure water availability for generations to come. For water utilities, this means we collaborate to develop reliable and affordable water supplies. And for industries, it means helping quantify and develop water supplies capable of meeting the day-to-day needs over the planned lifetime of a facility or operation.
Meet INTERA’s Leadership in Europe
Managing Director – France
Benoît Paris specializes in quantitative hydrogeology, geochemistry, and numerical code development for environmental and radioactive waste isolation projects. He has developed and implemented coupled geochemical and groundwater flow codes and groundwater models and conducted sensitivity analyses for site assessments and deep geologic repositories. He has also managed environmental due diligence projects, including site reconnaissance, safety audits, soil and groundwater investigations, and remediation system design for petrochemical facilities.
Managing Director – Switzerland
Chao Li brings expertise in waste isolation, geomechanics, multiphase flow modeling, and risk analysis. He develops analytical and numerical solutions to thermo-hydraulic-mechanical problems in complex media, addressing issues like radioactive waste disposal, CO2 sequestration, and landslides. Chao creates geological and repository models for various waste types, incorporating groundwater, heat transport, and geomechanics. He assesses the impacts of stress evolution on the safety of waste repositories, investigates the chemo-physical processes of rocks and clays, and assesses the performance of excavation-, heating-, gas generation- and climate change-induced effects.
Managing Director – United Kingdom
Patrick has over 30 years of international experience in ground engineering and infrastructure projects. Qualified in geotechnical engineering and geology, he has directed large multidisciplinary teams on high-profile projects, including the UK’s 2012 Olympic Park and Sydney Metro. Patrick excels in stakeholder management, data acquisition for design optimization, and risk management. His experience spans client, contractor, and consultant roles, allowing him to develop effective team approaches. He is actively involved in advancing geosciences and is the Chair of Think Deep UK and he mentors aspiring Chartered Geologists.
Director of European Water Services
Stephan Suter specializes in developing numerical models and decision support systems for water resource planning, surface water, and groundwater management. He has led water resources projects globally, including hydrodynamic modeling, flood assessments, and real-time forecasting. As INTERA’s Director of European Water Services, Stephan oversees business development and project delivery, focusing on scientifically-sound water management solutions. He collaborates with international teams to enhance water system resilience and sustainability, contributing to water security across Europe.
