INTERA is excited to welcome Joseph D. Hughes to our Water Resources & Supply Team as a Principal Hydrologist and internationally renowned hydrologic modeling expert. With a career dedicated to advancing hydrologic modeling and software interoperability, Joe brings a wealth of expertise that will strengthen INTERA’s ability to deliver innovative solutions for complex water resource challenges.
Joe is a globally recognized expert in groundwater and surface water modeling, having spent over 15 years at the USGS developing industry-standard modeling tools. He was a co-developer of MODFLOW 6, the latest generation of the widely used groundwater flow model, and a key contributor to FloPy, an open-source Python framework that has transformed groundwater modeling workflows. His work has focused on advancing watershed simulation, groundwater-surface water interactions, and the integration of physics-informed machine learning (PIML) techniques to improve hydrologic model calibration and predictive accuracy.
Beyond his technical contributions, Joe has played a leading role in national and international water modeling initiatives, serving as a USGS representative in interagency collaborations to develop the Next Generation National Water Model and leading efforts to improve software interoperability for integrated hydrologic modeling. His expertise in hydrologic simulation, software architecture, and computational techniques will further enhance INTERA’s ability to provide cutting-edge modeling and decision-support tools for water resource management.
Neil Deeds, Executive Vice President and Principal Water Resources Engineer at INTERA, stated, “Joe’s deep technical knowledge and industry leadership will be a tremendous asset to our team and clients.”
