INTERA was recently awarded a 4-year contract with the French National Agency for Radioactive Waste Management (Andra) to support characterization activities at the Bure Underground Research Lab (URL), in the North-East of France. The Bure URL, located some 500 meters underground in the Paris Basin, is being used to study the feasibility of storing high- and medium-level radioactive waste in a claystone host rock. INTERA is analyzing hydraulic tests and performing 1- and 2-phase flow modeling, which includes examining thermal and mechanical effects. This work further positions INTERA as a worldwide leader in supporting the characterization of deep geologic repositories for the storage and disposal of radioactive wastes.
