Remote Sensing

Using sophisticated forensic mapping techniques that integrate historical aerial photography and mapping

Determining historical and present-day irrigation practices to evaluate water rights, establishing beneficial use, or simply quantifying irrigation water use can be challenging. INTERA meets these challenges through the use of sophisticated forensic mapping techniques that integrate digital historical aerial photography, mapping, and documentation. Our GIS-based analyses, coupled with a practical understanding of on-farm irrigation practices gives us a unique toolset to evaluate historical irrigation patterns and determine water-right reliability. For analyses of irrigated lands over large areas (50,000 – 100,000 acres or more), INTERA applies methods based on satellite imagery such as Landsat. We have developed automated techniques that enable us to evaluate the location and timing of irrigation across the entire Landsat period of record (dating back over 40 years). In addition to determining the spatial and temporal distribution of irrigated lands, we estimate actual consumptive use by applying remote-sensing based energy-balance methods to quantify crop consumptive use. When quantified over large areas, such as an entire irrigation district, water managers are able to examine water balance on a basin scale, resulting in more informed water-management decisions.

Jason Gisel – Partner, Turn-Key Processing Solutions

We appreciate the technical work that has gone into evaluating our well fields and other water supplies that serve our customers. The ability of the utility to respond to growth depends upon our understanding of the investment decisions that lead to more resilient, safe, and affordable water supplies. Please let your staff know that we appreciate the expertise and skill that they bring to the largest utility in Central Indiana.”

Jeff Willman – VP Water Operations, Citizens Energy Group

I wish to thank you for the great job you all did on this project. It has truly been a pleasure to work with your team of dedicated professionals. We are very pleased how this project turned out.”

Olga Bauer – Hydrologist, Texas Water Development Board

From the first time that I spoke with them, I knew immediately that INTERA was exactly what we were looking for when we set out to find a hydrogeology company. INTERA’s knowledge is beyond impressive, but the thing that sets them apart is their attitude. They treat every job the same – as if it was their own project, no matter the size or location. Most importantly, they truly care that our projects are completed on time and on budget.”

Stratton Haley – President, RRIG Water Solutions
