History
INTERA was founded in 1974 when the environmental division of a petroleum engineering company, INTERCOMP Resource Development Engineering in Houston, Texas acquired the assets of Canadian-based ERA (Environment Resource Airborne) Sciences. Today, INTERA is firmly established as a middle-market, international engineering consulting business with a proven track record of developing and implementing technically sound and practical solutions to some of the most challenging environmental, water resource, coastal, and waste management issues faced by private industry and governmental agencies. INTERA founded with offices in Houston and Calgary.
Early work focuses on developing and applying air quality models (including first model capable of addressing air pollutant flow and dispersion over mountainous terrain) for mine permitting and airborne remote sensing to evaluate gas plant air emissions, monitor ice sheet movement, and survey geothermal resources.
Start work under multi-year subcontract with the Office of Nuclear Waste Isolation (contracted to the U.S. Department of Energy [USDOE]) to evaluate process models and develop and apply performance assessment methodology to examine a variety of potential radioactive waste repository sites and rock types.
Establish branch office in Baden Switzerland to provide gas migration modeling in support of Nagra’s radioactive waste disposal program.
Win 5-year Environmental Services prime contract as JV partner at DOE’s Nevada Test Site (now the Nevada National Security Site), in charge of well testing, flow and transport modeling and stakeholder communications.
Acquire Monitor Scientific, LLC in Denver to expand resources, expertise, and experience in radioactive waste disposal, bringing active involvement in process modeling, safety assessments, and licensing support for international disposal programs in countries including Finland, Sweden, and Japan.
Establish subsidiary, INTERA SAS, in Lyon, France to serve as base for expanding service offerings to commercial industry and government agencies in Europe.
