INTERA’s Phil Dompe, PE, Senior Coastal Engineer, is a co-author on an article recently featured in the Civil Engineering Magazine of the American Society of Civil Engineers. The article is entitled, “Designed for Durability” and discusses the Marc Basnight Bridge, which was completed this year and traverses the Oregon Inlet, one of the most dynamic and dangerous inlets on the Atlantic Cost. A bridge of this scale requires a solid foundation, so in order to accommodate varying scour profiles and subsurface conditions the geotechnical and structural project engineers developed a first-of-its-kind driven pile foundation verification method. The project team, which included INTERA, addressed all of the design challenges and provided the North Carolina Department of Transportation with the best value solution for the demanding project. The Marc Basnight Bridge also took the top honor in the Engineering News-Record (ENR) Southeast 2019 Regional Award for Best Project in the Highway/Bridge Category, as well as the ASCE North Carolina Section 2019 Project of the Year Award.
