Evaluating sediment transport and wave forces on coastal transportation infrastructure
INTERA developed the parametric wave/surge force formulas in the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) Guide Specifications for Bridges Vulnerable to Coastal Storms. These specifications enable the calculation of wave and surge forces on bridge superstructures and a variety of other pile-supported structures.
In support of infrastructure design projects, we have completed bridge hydraulics reports, analyses, and scour assessments for hundreds of individual riverine and tidal bridges across the United States. These applications have included prediction of design conditions during both hurricane storm surge events and upland riverine flooding events. We have also made numerous contributions in the area of scour analysis and prediction. Additional areas of active research include developing methods, equations, and screening criteria for determining the vulnerability of existing bridges to storm surge and wave loading, determining the input design parameters needed to compute surge and wave loading on bridges, computing vertical and horizontal wave loads on bridge spans, and evaluating the response of bridge superstructures to this type of loading.
