INTERA employees donned their running shoes to join more than 1,000 participants in the Gazelle Foundation’s 10th annual Run for the Water. The charity run included 5-kilometer, 10-mile, and children’s 1 kilometer races that took place in downtown Austin, TX. INTERA runners included Tricia Johnson, Gloria Teague, Joe Galemore, Jevon Harding, and Mary Wilkins (pictured from left to right).
Proceeds from each entrant’s contribution furnished one individual in Burundi, Africa, with a lifetime supply of daily access to clean water. To date, the Gazelle Foundation, a non-profit organization, has provided 60,000 Burundians with access to water by laying more than 90 miles of pipeline in 30 completed projects. More information is available at
gazellefoundation.org.
This event marked INTERA’s second year of participation in the run, adding the race to INTERA’s other annual charity participation efforts such as the WellAware Shower Strike and the Lantz Invitational Golf Tournament.

INTERA was recently presented with the 2016 Industry Service Award from the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers (ASABE). Gloria Teague, PE, CFM, an agricultural engineer in INTERA’s Austin office, accepted the award “For exceptional service to the agricultural and biological engineering profession and support to the ASABE Texas Section” at the Society’s annual meeting in Lubbock, Texas. Award selection criteria included leadership contributions to the Texas Section of ASABE, employee membership in ASABE, sponsorship of Texas Section activities, employment of agricultural engineers, and support of engineering in agriculture activities in Texas. INTERA provides services involving the use and/or management of water resources to support the agricultural industry including groundwater availability evaluations and water resource planning assistance. Examples of the company’s work include development of a web-based water meter data collection application to support water management and conservation, development of groundwater availability models of major and minor aquifers for long-term planning, and surface water reliability modeling to evaluate water security and alternative water supplies.

INTERA’s role as the prime contractor and overall project manager for developing a water plan for the Albuquerque Bernalillo County Water Utility Authority (Water Authority) has resulted in a plan that was not only approved unanimously by the Water Authority’s Governing Board, but one that puts the agency at the forefront of water planning in the U.S. Water 2120 (the Plan) was the result of a two-year effort involving Water Authority staff and multiple consultants. Development of the Plan included interaction with the Water Authority’s Technical Customer Advisory Committee (TCAC) and the Governing Board. In addition, the Plan was enhanced through an exhaustive public outreach program that included community conversations, a Town Hall meeting, and multiple presentations to federal and state stakeholders such as Bureau of Reclamation, the Corps of Engineers, U.S. Fish & Wildlife, the New Mexico Interstate Stream Commission, and many others. The Plan was also endorsed by the Nature Conservancy and local economic development organizations such as the Albuquerque Chamber of Commerce and the New Mexico Homebuilder’s Association.
Water 2120 looks at the current water situation in Albuquerque and projects the community’s needs based on various scenarios of climate variability and population growth. The Plan builds on the Water Authority’s past planning successes with conservation and the addition of surface water to the supply portfolio, both of which have allowed significant recovery of the aquifer that was previously the sole source of supply. The Plan is based on making prudent future investments in conservation, aquifer storage and recovery (ASR), stormwater capture, watershed restoration, and wastewater reuse. In so doing, it provides for a sustainable and resilient water supply in the face of an uncertain future, while wisely managing the groundwater aquifer as a drought reserve.
