Challenge: To quantify the company’s carbon footprint from Scope 1 and 2 sources and effectively manage future greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. 

Solution: INTERA developed an emissions inventory of sources of GHGs that are classified as Scope 1 and 2 emitters, using the methods prescribed under the revised edition of The Greenhouse Gas Protocol: A Corporate Accounting and Reporting Standard, by the World Business Council on Sustainable Development and the World Resource Institute.  These include emissions from offshore production and storage operations, onshore storage and shore base operations, transportation via seas, air, and land, and electricity consumed from the local power grids to support onshore logistics and corporate offices. Two benchmark years (2017 and 2021) were used to evaluate the change in footprint between two five-year intervals. Emissions for offshore operations were sourced from the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management’s Air Quality System and were quality assured for accuracy and consistency.  Emissions from other sources were calculated by INTERA using US Environmental Protection Agency prescribed methods and equations for their specified source types.  The values developed through this inventory exercise were then aggregated to quantify the total emissions with respect to GHG releases and to identify the greatest sources of GHG emissions. We also interpreted current and emerging regulations that affect operations and provided recommendations on the best methods for data collection, data quality assurance, and source emissions reduction.  

Results: INTERA’s solution not only provides QuarterNorth Energy with a better understanding of their impact on climate change but defines a roadmap for reducing this impact.
