INTERA’s founder, Dr. Ron Lantz, has always set a strong standard for stewardship within the company and in the community. To recognize the duty that all INTERA employees have to stewardship, the company has created the Ron Lantz Stewardship Award. The mission statement of the award is: To empower INTERA employees to act as stewards of the environment for the betterment of humankind. Awarded on an annual basis through a competitive proposal process, the award includes a $10,000 stipend for expenses and a 1-month paid sabbatical to execute a project that exemplifies stewardship.

INTERA’s Beronica Lee-Brand and Shannon George recently volunteered as judges in the Junior/Senior Division of the 2018 Austin Energy Regional Science Festival—a competition for 3rd through 12th grade students from 23 school districts and 12 counties in Texas. With over 3,500 students and families in attendance, it is among the largest of the 13 regional science fairs held in Texas. The festival offers a public viewing of the science projects, educational booths, and scientific demonstrations. Beronica and Shannon stated that, “it’s a great way to support the community, and we’re just glad we could be part of it.” Both said they were impressed with the quality and innovativeness of the science projects, making their judging responsibilities even more of a challenge.

INTERA’s President & CEO, Dr. Marsh Lavenue, and Mr. Bryan Leach, the principal author of the course materials and course facilitator, held the first INTERA 101 training for a group of 24 employees. The 1-day course is comprised of five modules that provide an overview of INTERA’s history, corporate culture, the consulting business model, customer service, and financial best practices. While primarily intended as an on-boarding training course, INTERA will offer the course to all employees over the next twelve months. Dr. Lavenue stated that INTERA 101 will “ensure consistency in the knowledge of our history, our culture, and how we operate the business and why.”

Dr. Raziuddin “Raz” Khaleel, a Senior Hydrogeologist at INTERA, is one of three authors of a new textbook that integrates classic principles of flow through porous media with recently developed stochastic analyses to provide new insight on subsurface hydrology. The book not only presents theories, but also emphasizes their underlying assumptions, limitations, and the potential pitfalls that may occur as a result of blind application of the theories as ‘cookie-cutter’ solutions. The book has been developed for advanced-level courses on groundwater fluid flow, hydraulics, and hydrogeology, in either civil/environmental engineering or geoscience departments. It is also a valuable reference text for researchers and professionals in civil/environmental engineering, geology, soil science, environmental science, and petroleum and mining engineering. The book is available at:

INTERA’s Abhishek Singh Co-author on Paper Published in Journal of Hydrologic Engineering
INTERA’s Dr. Abhishek Singh is a co-author on a paper published in by the Journal of Hydrologic Engineering that describes the essential elements of uncertainty analyses in hydrologic and hydraulic modeling and discusses their purpose, use, and relationships in decision making. It also includes recently available information from the literature and from numerous papers presented at recent conferences on the subject. The paper identifies several challenges in quantification of uncertainty estimates from modeling efforts and recommends resolutions from the perspectives of researchers and practicing engineers. The abstract can be viewed here.
Continue ReadingIn Memory of Dr. Daniel Erskine
It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to our good friend and colleague Dr. Daniel Erskine. We were very fortunate when Dan decided to join INTERA as a Principal Geologist and Geochemist in 2006. He was a key member of INTERA’s mining consulting group and played an integral role in helping recruit and retain some of the company’s top performing staff in Albuquerque. Dan was a well-respected geoscientist in the uranium mining industry and his knowledge and reputation are primary reasons that many of INTERA’s mining clients selected us to meet their consulting needs. He fully understood that the consulting business is built on personal relationships, and worked diligently to establish strong and trusting relationships with clients through the honesty and integrity of his work. We know that clients appreciated his straight-answer approach to consulting and he served as a valued mentor to all of his colleagues. Dan will not only be missed by the entire INTERA family, but by everyone that had the pleasure of knowing him personally
and professionally.
