Erick Fox, GIS Analyst at INTERA, will be speaking at the spring meeting of the New Mexico Geographic Information Council (NMGIC) in Albuquerque on April 26th. His presentation will cover the development and results of a regional water supply infrastructure model that INTERA created for a large area in Southern California. The purpose of the model was to facilitate regional water planning among eight water utilities in the area, which serve a total population of approximately 900,000 people. The hydraulic infrastructure model incorporated water supplies from local groundwater and surface water, and water transported from the Sierra Nevadas to Southern California via the State Water Project (SWP). The model includes hundreds of water supply infrastructure elements (wells, pumps, valves, treatment plants, pipelines, etc.) that can be adjusted to plan for various scenarios and conditions, such as unscheduled service disruptions, drought contingency planning, and new infrastructure planning.
NMGIC is a nonprofit organization fostering dialogue among geospatial professionals in New Mexico since 1984. It is officially recognized by the state of New Mexico, the United States Geological Survey (USGS), and the United States Board on Geographic Names (BGN) as the primary point of contact for mapping priorities and geographic names in the state of New Mexico.
Erick Fox has been a GIS Analyst at INTERA since 2017, and his work has focused primarily on GIS and remote sensing applications for water resources and mining. To learn more, visit: https://nmgic.com/?p=879

Peter Castiglia to Co-Chair Panel on Water Risks at Mining Finance Conference
Peter Castiglia, Vice President of INTERA’s Mining and Water Resources Group, will be co-chairing a panel on water risks at the 2019 Current Trends in Mining Finance Conference in New York, NY, being held April 28 – May 1. The event will focus on the outlook, key trends, and issues impacting raising capital in the global mining industry – and highlight solutions, risks, and opportunities. Speakers will discuss case studies and talk about how management and investors use best practices and technology to anticipate, track, manage, and reduce technical and non-technical risk, including environmental, political, and financial risk. The event is organized by the New York Section of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration (SME), which is an association of more than 14,000 geoscientists, mining, and mineral professionals in over 100 countries. Each year, the conference draws leading practitioners and experts involved with funding and advising mining projects from around the world to share and discuss trends impacting the financing of mining projects.
In addition to serving as a member of INTERA’s Executive Team, Mr. Castiglia leads multi-disciplinary teams that develop water-supply strategies for mineral processing and mining operations, approaches for dewatering underground operations, and predictive tools to evaluate potential impacts of proposed operations on water resources. He and the other panelists will be discussing “Water Risks: Approaches to Avoid Problems and Failure.” The group will explore the water risks common to most mineral development projects, illustrate common approaches for characterizing and controlling water risks, and share examples of how disruptions from water problems can have severe impacts on the financial performance of a development or operating company. The Meals on Wheels Central Texas Golf Benefit will take place on Monday, April 8, 2019 at the Avery Ranch Golf Club.
The tournament will benefit Meals on Wheels Central Texas (MOWCTX) thanks to INTERA’s founder Ron Lantz, a generous and longtime supporter of the MOWCTX mission. Because of Ron’s passion to give back, he started his own golf tournament many years ago for his friends and co-workers at INTERA, to benefit charities in the community. INTERA is proud to continue to serve as a title sponsor for this event, which will help provide meals for hungry seniors in Central Texas.
Entry tickets are available for $150 at the Meals on Wheels event page. Registration is open from 11:30am to 1:00pm on April 8, and the tournament begins at 1:30pm, following lunch. Dinner and awards will take place at 6:00pm.
INTERA’s Daniel Lupton, PG, Matt Uliana, PhD, PG, and Pat Jurcek, PG, Published Article in Infill Thinking.
INTERA’s Daniel Lupton, PG, Senior Hydrogeologist, Matt Uliana, PhD, PG, Senior Hydrogeologist, and Pat Jurcek, PG, Senior Hydrogeologist, recently published an article in Infill Thinking entitled “A(n Underground) River Runs Through It.” The article discusses their work developing water supplies for frac sand mines in Texas and takes a deeper look into groundwater and the Permian frac sand boom. In addition, the technical analysis leverages INTERA’s quantitative modeling and aquifer characterization skills demonstrated in recent mine-related water resource projects in south and west Texas.
